GPS Receivers

Global Positioning Systems

GPS, or global positioning systems, have really exploded onto the scene in the last decade. The large, bulky and inconvenient GPS units that were available back in the 1980s and ’90s have given way to trimmer and more convenient handheld GPS models, as well as cell phone GPS, pocket PC GPS and even GPS watches. In fact, there are so many GPS receivers available nowadays that it will be beneficial to run through the different types so you can be sure to get exactly what you need.

Types of GPS Receivers

There are two different types of GPS receivers available: self-contained and non–self-contained. Self-contained models are what we classically think of as GPS units— automotive GPS, many handheld GPS, marine GPS and golf GPS. They consist of a computer and screen with a built-in GPS receiver. Self-contained GPS models can be further broken down into mapping versus non-mapping models. The difference is pretty straightforward: mapping GPS receivers will actually track and record your position as they are run, allowing you to keep track of where you have traveled, whereas non-mapping GPS units come with map software packages installed and are used to offer directions to locations of interest.

GPS

Non–self-contained GPS receivers need a computer (often a pocket PC or PDA) and accompanying GPS receiver software in order to display their actual positions. The link between the GPS receiver and the computer can be a wireless interface (as in Bluetooth GPS) or a cable. USB GPS receivers are a prime example of non–self-contained GPS; the GPS receiver is a separate entity that you must plug into your laptop, pocket PC or PDA in order to use.

There are many websites that offer GPS receiver reviews for almost every make and model available. Once you have decided what you are looking for, be sure to check online and see what customer feedback is available to make sure you’re getting the right unit for you.

GPS Receiver Software

There is a lot of different software available for all the varieties of GPS receivers. All software is designed to enhance the convenience of your GPS unit. Perhaps you want to increase the number of maps available in your GPS database, or you find the interface annoying and want one that’s more user-friendly. Maybe you wish you had certain tools available or you want more information displayed about you current location. You can find many of these enhancements online through various software upgrades. It is generally safe to apply any software you find by the manufacturer, but it is recommended that you avoid using other software unless you are very comfortable with how it works.
