GPS Maps
All about GPS navigation maps
Almost all GPS programs you find now are about detailing your position on a map pulled out of a database. Gone are the days of the GPS providing only longitude and latitude coordinates and leaving the user to hunt down a map to find out what his or her current position really is. Today's GPS maps are packed full of information, with every successive generation of GPS navigation equipment offering that much more. You can find any type of map you desire, be it road, topographical or even marine charts. Many of them now also come with thousands of points of interest (POIs) marked, so you can find your way to interesting locations while traveling.
The Wonder of GPS Navigation Maps
Car navigation maps almost have more information than you will ever know what to do with. With modern wireless and satellite Internet, they can be updated periodically to provide you with current information on road conditions, allowing you to always take the quickest path when traveling anywhere.
New 3-D visualizations of the maps make it far easier to follow directions, as you can now see the actual shape of the land you are driving through. Many GPS maps also contain thousands of POIs, allowing you to find a nearby restaurant or hotel or whatever you may need.
For the most part, these maps contain static information, and while they can be updated to keep them current, they cannot help you when you encounter spontaneous problems that develop on the road, such as an accident. Some impressive steps have been made in mobile GPS mapping, however, that may soon allow up-to-the-minute road information maps to be offered.
The New Age of GPS Mapping Software
Thanks to open source GPS mapping software, we may not have to wait too long to get a GPS navigation system that functions in real time and can help you prepare for traffic and situations that arise on the run. A few Individuals have recently released navigation systems that are produced by users. They have introduced games that encourage people to travel to unmapped locations to get the locations fed into the map database, and they have introduced a cell phone GPS map that allows people to update current road conditions in a Twitter-like fashion. This way, you can be aware of road conditions beyond typical traffic patterns and scheduled delays.
