Now that you’ve picked up a GPS unit, you will want to be sure you have everything you need in the way of GPS accessories to get the most out of your GPS and keep it safe. For GPS accessories, you will be looking for two things: GPS cases and GPS software.

Portable GPS devices require a solid, dependable case to be sure you do not lose or damage your unit. GPS software updates will allow you to get more out of your GPS unit than you thought possible at purchase. The two biggest GPS companies at the moment are Garmin and Magellan, with both companies offering GPS units for any type of environment. Let’s have a look at what each company has to offer in terms of accessories for these units.

Garmin GPS Accessories

Garmin was founded back in 1989 and has exploded onto the world scene in the 20 years since. They are now one of the world’s leading GPS providers and have learned to offer what people really want and need in navigation technology. They offer an array of carrying cases for their products, from simple plastic polymer/cloth cases to the more expensive leather bags. They also offer frequent updates of their GPS software to keep their products up to date and a multitude of adapters and connectors for their various handheld and portable models.

Magellan GPS Accessories

Magellan is another big player in high-tech GPS offerings. They offer a range of GPS equipment and accessories, so here’s a sampling of the four most sought-after models:

• Magellan Maestro accessories. The Maestro is a car GPS navigation system that offers both 2-D and 3-D visuals, as well as audio direction. The accessories for this model include a form-fitted leather carrying case, a variety of mounting brackets, high-power antennae and car or AC power adaptors.
• Magellan 700 accessories. A standard car GPS with a touch screen and audio direction, as well as an extensive POI database, the 700 has such accessory options as standard car and AC power adaptors, a form-fitted protective sleeve and a universal cradle that makes it easier to move your unit between vehicles.
• Magellan Meridian accessories. The Meridian is a handheld GPS line that comes in a few different varieties to suit the hiker, traveler and mariner. Accessories include power adapters, antennae upgrades, pocket PC connectors, memory cards and protective cases.
• Magellan 600t accessories. This is another Magellan Roadmate model with many of the same accessories available as the 700. The 600t lacks its own carrying case, however, so you will have to either find a general purpose case or see if a similar model’s case will work.
